Pet Industry Association of Australia By its leaders and members, past and present
We stroll down memory lane with a number of pet business professionals and discovers how the PIAA has progressed to become a leader in the Australian pet industry today.
Three decades ago, the pet industry was virtually unknown to the Australian marketplace. Not because it wasn’t a successful industry; on the contrary, business was thriving with new ideas and technologies. The pet industry was simply lacking a strong, united voice.
In September of 1979, a small group of industry representatives came together with concerns about increasing regulations for the pet trade and formed the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC), known today as the Pet Industry Association of Australia (PIAA). In a year’s time, PIJAC’s first annual general meeting commenced representing 42 financial members, compared to 19 in the first six months. It was at this meeting that the wheel of fortune began turning for pet businesses around the nation.
