VIC - GOTAFE: Vocational training for careers working with animals

Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE offers a range of programs in the companion animal care and veterinary nursing. Training is delivered into workplaces across Victoria and Southern NSW through distance learning and online delivery, as well as face-to-face learning at the Rural Industries Campus in Wangaratta, North East Victoria. This course is suitable for those interested in pursuing a career in animal care. It is designed for school students, volunteers in welfare agencies or shelters, Australian Apprentice-Trainees in Pet Industry workplaces such as pet shops, boarding kennels & catteries, grooming establishments, and in Veterinary Hospitals, and for people who are considering animal care as a career.
Students will learn about animal handling, feeding and husbandry in a broad range of animals and the importance of OH &S. Students will gain skills in working with animals and communicating with people to improve their skills for employment in Animal industries.
Program Structure
The Certificate II Animal Studies structure is tailored to suit the needs of the student through an extensive range of elective units. It can be undertaken on-line, on-campus, through workplace based training, or as a blend of these delivery modes.
The Certificate III in Companion Animal Services provides training for those who are employed (including Australian Apprenticeship-Traineeships) or who are seeking employment in the Companion Animal Industry e.g. Boarding Kennels, Grooming, Pet Shops, Animal Shelter Attendant and Dog Day Care.
Students learn how to care for a range of animals, how to be an effective animal care team member, the importance of monitoring and maintaining animal health and welfare, and the importance of OH & S in companion animal businesses. Students can specialize in a number of areas; e.g. grooming, fish care, birds, breeding, business/retail skills, and many others.
Program Structure
The Certificate III in Companion Animal Services can be undertaken as a workplace traineeship, or through part-time on-campus study at the new Rural Industries Campus, Wangaratta in combination with Certificate II in Animal Studies, resulting in a double qualification.
Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services gives Skills Recognition (RPL) to managers and experienced employees of animal shelters, boarding kennels & catteries, animal breeding, animal training, pet shops, aquarium, aviary and animal grooming businesses.
Skills in business management, stock control, animal handling, animal behaviour, animal training, OHS, animal health, grooming, merchandising, animal health, OHS, and the selection, care and sales of animals such as dogs, cats, birds, fish, reptiles and other pets are covered.
Learn basic animal handling, rescue and first aid techniques in order to be able to practically respond to animals in need that require immediate attention.
Topics include:
- Recognition and response to emergency situations
- Assessing animals condition and measuring vital sign
- The DRABC of animal first aid
- Safe and humane rescue, capture, handling and transport techniques of animals
- Specific Animal first aid techniques - CPR, haemorrhage control, first aid care for wounds, fractures and other injuries, dehydration, stress and shock
- Bandage techniques
- Animal first aid kit
- Basic care of injured, displaced or orphaned animal

Learn professional grooming techniques, including bathing, clipping and scissoring. Experience a taste of what it is to be a professional dog groomer. Learn to clip your own pet and breed specific clipping techniques.
This course involves practical learning, and participants are encouraged to bring along their own dogs to work on. Please discuss with your trainer the suitability of your animal prior to course commencement. Please wear suitable clothing, including covered shoes.
Topics include:
- Assessing dogs grooming requirements with regards to its health and coat condition
- Understanding dog behaviour and safe dog handling
- Pre-bathing techniques including brushing and de-matting
- Bathing, use of shampoos, rinsing and drying techniques
- Trimming - face, feet, nails
- Use and care of clippers, scissors and other grooming equipment
- Clipping and styling techniques to suit breeds
- Customer service.


NSW - Dog Grooming Australia

Accredited Dog Grooming Courses, Nationally Recognised Qualification for new pet groomers and skill Recognition for existing groomers.

Dog Grooming Australia has developed Dog Grooming Training Courses and assessment. The courses and assessment have been developed in partnership with The Parramatta College, a Registered Training Organisation (National Provider No. 90276)

Dog Grooming Australia has nationally recognised courses and assessment is based on a national unit of competency - RUV4509A Provide professional companion animal grooming services, from Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services RUV40304. You will be assessed against this unit of competency. On completion of all assessments if you are successful you will be awarded a Statement of Attainment.

Students would gain specific skills in animal care including training in the following:

• Nutrition
• care and management of dogs, cats, birds and small mammals
• reception and office administration
• grooming and clipping dogs and cats

This course is offered in both full time and part-time mode. You will undertake your training at the Animal Sciences Training Centre at Ithaca Campus. This course will take 18 weeks to complete.

Students can be expected to attend classes between Monday and Friday from 8am to 5pm.

QLD - Water Efficiency Certificate Course 2010

In November 2007, the SE QLD Water Restrictions came into place for any person or entity conducting a business which is primarily focused on delivering the relevant service in:

• Mobile car washing and detailing (e.g. businesses washing sedans, four wheel drives and mini-buses)
• Dog washing and grooming businesses (i.e. any pet related business using town water to wash animals)
• External cleaners (any outdoor washing business involved in washing pavements, driveways, buildings, windows, roofs and other outdoor surfaces)
If you use town water, you must:
• Be trainined in efficient waster use practices (usually by your industry association)
• Be registered with Commerce Queensland http://www.cciq.com.au/ as a trained operator
• Operate in accordance with water use efficiency guidelines.

The Pet Industry Associaiton of Australia, conduct courses in SE Qld (Ithica Campus) and Sunshine Coast, for Businesses within the Pet Industry using best Practice Guidelines. The 90 minute course structure is outline below

• Operators discussion of water conservation ideas
• Operators undertake straight forward test on water efficiency guidelines
• Operators self assessment undertaken and discussion
• Next steps leading to Commerce QLD issuing certificate

The Commerce QLD certificate cost will be noted on the application. Special pricing applies for those Mobile hydrobath businesses that have more than one hydrobath vehicle will be required by Commerce QLD to pay an additional fee per vehicle. The certificate to be issued by Commerce QLD will comprise a certificate of registration (printed), a sticker and a card.

The business representative who has undertaken the course will be able ‘on-train’ others within the business regarding the water best practice guidelines within the certificate cost. Businesses will need to keep a record of those on-trained and be able to provide evidence of this under a statuary declaration.

A Water Efficiency Certificate Course is now a prerequisite to obtain a permit from Commerce QLD to commercially wash dogs in Sth East QLD during the water restrictions.

Microchipping in Queensland

Certificate III in Companion Animal Services

This course is for those looking to work in an animal care and educational capacity outside of the veterinary industry. It compliments those seeking employment in pet retailers and training schools, kennels/catteries, dog daycare centres and animal education centres/theme parks. Subjects include: Assist with general animal care, participate in workplace communications, provide information on companion animal selections and general care, provide enrichment for companion animals and capture, handle and transport companion animals.

The National Dog Trainers Federation is proud to offer the Canine Behaviour Specialist Course. This program is structured specifically for persons wishing to specialize in canine behaviour problems and behaviour modification techniques. The program goes far beyond teaching the basic principles of how to be an obedience instructor. It is designed to educate participants to make accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment plans and to provide them with the tools necessary to deal with canines displaying a vast range of behaviour problems. This specialist program will only be offered once per year and places are strictly limited.
