Application for 5 new species to the allowable import list…

Boesemani Rainbowfish

We are happy to announce that work has begun on preparing import risk assessment applications to add 5 new species to the allowable import list. These 5 species have been 100% funded by the PIAA as part of our ongoing focus & commitment to the aquatic sector of the pet industry.

The species are;

Melanotaenia boesemani (Boesemani Rainbowfish)

Sewellia lineolata (Stripped Hill stream Loach)

Boraras brigittae (Red Chilli Rasbora)

Aplocheilichthyes normani (Normans Lampeye)

Synodontis petricola (Dwarf Spotted Catfsh)

These species have been chosen as they are closely related to already approved species (which significantly increases the likelihood of approval). They are also readily available and affordable overseas which will mean they can become mainstream bread and butter fish for the community tropical aquarium.

These 5 species are in addition to the previous industry initiative that saw 9 species already applied for over the last 10 months, using money raised through contributions from industry stakeholders. PIAA also contributed to this project and have been heavily involved in the steering committee.

The application and approval process is time consuming and onerous, with applications typically taking 12-18 months to reach a final determination. With 9 species already in the pipeline and 5 more underway (14 total), we should see some positive outcomes for our industry begin to materialise over the next 6 to 12 months.

It is PIAA’s intention to continue to support new species applications into the future, but we can only continue to do that with strong membership. It’s never been more critical to renew or re-join as members and tell your colleagues about the good work PIAA is currently supporting.
